Elon musk said that SpaceX had spent almost $80 million to help and support Starlink in Ukraine.
Elon Musk said on Friday that SpaceX cannot forever fund the Starlink internet service in Ukraine. SpaceX has given Ukraine thousands of Starlink terminals and sent several thousand more terminals after a statement pointed out that his rocket company had asked the Pentagon to pay for the donations.
Musk’s statement on the question of help for the internet service in Ukraine comes after he enraged many Ukrainians with a bid to end Russia’s war in their country that contained surrendering some regions.
Elon Musk said on Twitter that SpaceX is not asking to return past expenses, but also cannot fund the current system forever and send several thousand more terminals that have data usage up to 100X greater than regular households. According to musk, this is unreasonable.
The richest billionaire and Tesla owner said that Starlink was spending around $20 million per month. Till now SpaceX had spent around $80 million to help and support Starlink in Ukraine.
Musk says that this is a burn for maintaining satellite service in Ukraine.
CNN told on Thursday that SpaceX sent a letter to the Pentagon last month stating that they could not continue to finance the Starlink service in Ukraine. And it may have to quit financing it unless the US military supported it with tens of millions of dollars a month. SpaceX did not react to a request for comment.
Due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, internet services were disrupted. Elon Musk provided Starlink service in late February to support Ukraine at that sad moment. Since then, SpaceX has given thousands of terminals.
Ukraine’s vice prime minister, Mykhailo Fedorov, said this week that Starlink services supported restoring energy and communications infrastructure in critical areas after over 100 Russian cruise missile attacks.
If talking about Russia’s statement, it is just a “special military operation” and it does not focus on civilians.
Musk outlined overall criticism from Ukrainians over his peace agenda in which he suggested that Ukraine forever surrender the Crimea region to Russia, that new referendums be kept under UN auspices to resolve the fate of the Russian-controlled region, and that Ukraine agree to neutrality.
According to Ukraine, they will never agree to cede land seized by force, and legal referendums cannot be held in an active territory where many individuals have been killed or forced out.
