A general election is due to take place in Sri Lanka before next March for the new presidential election.
The Daily Mirror, a local news organization in Sri Lanka, has revealed that current President Dutabaya Rajapaksa will end his term as president and hold parliamentary elections before March next year – in front of parliament next Wednesday.
Rajapaksa had announced his resignation on July 13 in discussions with Prime Minister Ranil Vikramasinghe after nationwide protests last Saturday. The address of President Rajapaksa is still unknown. Following discussions within the political party until Sunday evening, several MPs had urged Prime Minister Renal Bikramasinghelai not to leave the government, but rather to hold the presidency.
The protesters – who have occupied the presidential residence – have said they will not leave the president’s residence until President Rajapaksa resigns.
