Who Am I? The Ultimate Truth Of Life & Beauty of Ashtavakra Gita

-

In many spiritual books and sessions, you might have heard the term ‘Who am I’ and most of us ask this query in many situations in our life. But the most interesting thing about this question is it’s really deep. The whole truth of the universe is hidden inside the query. Don’t know how?. Don’t worry, you will discover all about it in this interesting post.

‘I’ is a natural tendency that we bring from the starting of our so-called life. We define life as the duration of birth to date. It is a true but very limited definition. If you dive into the spiritual world, life becomes a more expandable truth that has no boundaries.

Whatever we see around comes from our interests and desire. We don’t see what exactly there is. For example, a man who lives in a city doesn’t feel loud sounds and crowded but if a villager goes to the town, he will be disturbed by the loudness of the city. The point is why people in town don’t feel that loudness?. It’s easy to understand that we see whatever we want to see and we don’t see what is exactly there. It’s our conditioning of body and mind.

Who Am I?

Many spiritual teachings and scriptures talk about this question. They remind you what is your actual form. Not to ask this question to others. This is specially designed to explore the inner world. The beauty of who am I is that the whole universe lies into it because the whole existence of a seer comes into question. The truth of Vedanta explains how we form as ego and spread in whole life. Who am I drives us into the light of wisdom, you can also call it self-realization, liberation, or awakening.

Concerning the term Who Am I, multiple scriptures beautifully describe the existence of ‘I’ and remind you who you are exactly. Such as Gita, Bhagvat Gita, Upanishad, Vedanta, Ashtavakra Gita, and many others. I especially prefer Ashtavakra Gita because it is one of the most popular ways of explaining your truth which directly speaks the truth. The is no right or left, Ashtavakra likes to talk simple and easy. The beauty of the Ashtavakra Gita is remarkable. In this post, we will talk based on this Gita.

Overview of Ashtavakra Gita

The Ashtavakra Gita is also popular as The Song of Ashtavakra is a classical text in Advaita Vedanta tradition. It is in the form of a dialogue between The King of Mithila, Janaka, and the sage Ashtavakra. It is an ancient Vedic scripture regarded as the peak of Vedantic Knowledge. Sage Ashtavakra takes Janaka on a deep journey of self-inquiry and unblocking all sorts of false notions easily. Discovering the truth by seeing thing as it is, is the pattern of understanding Ashtavakra Gita.

Who AM I Spiritually?

I is our basic tendency of existence. We can’t think anything beyond ‘I’ tendency. Everything we can experience and see around, the inner and outer world is surrounded by ‘I’, which is also referred to as a seer, ego, or feeling of being in many spiritual terms. Some compare our ultimate form with the sound of silence or some talk about pure consciousness and full awareness also.

The major point which needs to be understood about this question “Who Am I?” is to understand that it is a way to discover what is not our exact self. This discovers what we are not. We as ignorant minds are attached to several things that we are not ultimately. Such as we think our body is we but that’s not true. We think that we are out names or forms that we carry. We have bonded ourselves with various material things on many levels such as name and identity, national identity, social status, bodily identity, and mainly psychological identity. Even our feeling of being is full of conflicts. That’s all the false notions/conflicts that need to be clear regarding knowing our real self.

Mind

Our mind is extremely powerful as well as mesh too. In general, whatever we call about the mind is the very surface of its definition. There is no such material as mind. We can see and touch our brian but not mind.

The mind has several dimensions, holding its universe. What we call a mind is just a certain combination of memory and intelligence. Spiritually there is not much significance of thoughts. It is a tiny aspect of our brain.

Once it is oriented towards its full potential, it can finish any job. For example, imaginary projects of 100 years ago have been now possible such as computer technology, rocket technologies, comfortable lifestyle, electricity, vehicle, and so on.
